Good Day

I am new here so please be kind. I am Steve from Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA. Looking for any knowledge of Rowland family that may have came to the states. I can go back about 5 generations on my side, but that’s about it.  Any help would be nice. I feel we came from the UK.

Thanks

About swrowland

Born in Memphis, TN. 4th of 5 sons born to Martha L. Mellinger and Robert L. Rowland. Robert was one of nine born to Orval W. Rowland and Golda Veach of Queen City, Missouri, USA. I am married with 4 children. Over 30 years of military service. Looking for more on the Rowland family. I have only gotten about 5 generations back and seemed to hit a wall. I am sure we came from the UK. story has it that the family came down the Ohio Valley and were in the logging and timber business. The family split. Some went south and some crossed the river at Cairo Ill. I am from the group that crossed the river. I have lived most of my life in the south, but went to school with a girl named Linda Rowland that looked a lot like my cousins. Her Oldest brother told my mother the same story my grandfather told, but he was from the group that went south. Interestingly enough there was a Jesse James Rowland that was my grandfathers brother. Seems he was named after the outlaw Jesse James because he frequented the Queen City area during his lively days. Another brother George fought in WWI. My Father fought in WWII in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He was a pharmacist mate/dental laboratory technician. They had the same rate. My brother James was in the Navy. I am in the Army and a Brigade Command Sergeant Major. My Oldest Son, Nathan is a geospatial engineer, and Benjamin is an Intel Officer. My two youngest are twins Emma and Evan. would love to make the tie to the UK and working on it. any leads would be great.

    Hi Steve
    Good to hear from you.
Rowland is quite a common surname in the UK. I suggest you try some Ancestry UK census searches which go back to about 1841.
I have no information about any of my family going to the US in the 1850’s or thereabouts. All those I have uncovered are in the tree-but you will note that we have recently uncovered a large line of the family in Australia
I would like to be related to Jesse James Rowland!
    Good luck
    Richard Rowland

    Steve-
I hear there is a Rowland Family Genealogical Forum on genealogy.com a subsidiary of Ancestry.
There are many American Rowlands comparing notes about their families on this site
    All best
    Richard Rowland
